One of the most common and notable measurement systems when it comes to cooking is the conversion of ounces to gallons.
If you’re here to know about how many ounces in a gallon, you’re definitely in the right place. If I may get straight to the point, there are about 128 ounces in a gallon.
In my experience cooking meals for my family almost every day, the skill of converting between measurements cannot be overemphasized if your recipes must always come out best.
There are going to times when you’ll come across recipes that need measurements you are either not used to or is not readily available.
This is why you need a basic knowledge of different conversions.
For the sake of this article, our focus is going to be on how many oz in a gallon. (5)

System of Measurement
Before we continue any further on how many fluid ounces in a gallon, it is important that we acknowledge that our answer will depend on the country we live in and their adopted system of measurement.
This is to say that the relationship between measurements (which in this case is ounces and gallons) varies between countries.
Generally, there two basic systems of measurement and they are the US and the British (also known as imperial).
As much as both systems may be similar for most measurement types, there is a significant difference when dealing with volume measurements. (1)
Ounce Measurement
An ounce was originally a unit of weight, but has been extended for use as a unit of volume and is denoted by the symbol Oz.
That means sometimes, ounce measurement is used for measuring liquid capacities, and at other times, it is used for measuring mass or weight capacities.
The value of the fluid in the imperial system of measurement differs from the value in the British system of measurement.
As a rule of thumb, fluid ounce in the US system is about 4% larger than a fluid ounce in the imperial system.
The British Ounce
This is one unit that has over the years associated with some form of inconsistency in the standard of mass used in its evaluation.
But, in countries like Ireland and England, the ounce translates to one-sixteenth of a pound or about to 437.5 grains.
The American Ounce
As we have earlier stated, different countries are very likely to have different value accrued to an ounce.
It has also been established that an ounce in Britain is equal to 1/12 of a pound. In America, an ounce in translates to 28 grams S.I unit.
Gallon Measurement
Gallon itself is a unit of volume and is denoted by “gal”. Its use in measuring the liquid capacities applies to both the Imperial measurement system and US customary systems.
While the Imperial system has one type of gallon, the US system has two types of a gallon (dry gallon and fluid gallon). As a rule of thumb, the Imperial gallon is 20% larger than the US gallon. (2)
The U.S Liquid Gallon
As we had already established, the US liquid gallon is not as heavy as the imperial gallon. Its measure is based on the US wine gallons which are 231 cubic inches and in ounces is equal to 128 oz.
This is also equal to 1/128 of the standard US gallon.
When this unit of measurement is used in terms of volume, the pressure and temperature are practically taken into account.
The reason is that; any alteration in any of the factors results in a change of volume.
For instance, the volume of any product such as petroleum or alcoholic beverage is usually measured with the assumption that the temperature is 15.6 °C
The U.S. dry gallon
This unit of measurement is also used in terms of volume.
It refers to the measure of the capacity of dry material and is approximately equal to 1/8 of 2150 cubic inches (Winchester bushel value), which is in turn equal to 4.404 liters. (4)
Relationship between Ounces and Gallons
US Fluid Gallon to US Fluid Ounces
We have already established that one gallon is made up of 128 US fluid ounces. To convert any value of US fluid gallons to fluid ounces, you multiply the value of the US fluid gallon by 128.
128 US fluid ounces = 1 US Fluid Gallon
For instance, the number of ounces in say one and a half US fluid gallon can be realized by multiplying 1.5 by 128, which gives you 192 US fluid ounces.
UK Fluid Gallon to UK Fluid Ounces
When it comes to UK Fluid gallon, we have an equivalent of 160 UK fluid ounces.
Also, to convert any value of UK gallons to fluid ounces, you multiply the value of UK Fluid gallon by 160.
160 Imperial fluid ounces = 1 UK Fluid Gallon
For instance, the number of ounces in say one and a half UK fluid gallon can be realized by multiplying 1.5 by 160, which gives you 240 UK fluid ounces. (3)
